Ipswich Buddhist Centre - an FWBO Centre

About the Centre

From alcohol to spirit

The Centre occupies the spacious rooms above three shops right in the town centre. The building was built as a pub in the 1880's - the three shops below occupy what used to be the three bars, and the Centre occupies the elegant function rooms on the first floor. There is a large room dedicated to meditation practice, a spacious sitting room where most of the teaching and discussion groups take place, and a kitchen and office. The Ipswich Sangha (or congregation) has grown steadily since activities were started in Ipswich 15 years ago, to the point where we were able to take on this wonderful space - a place of stillness in the heart of the town.

The Centre is open to anyone as a place to come together, develop friendships, and practise - you do not have to be a Buddhist. It is registered as a place of religious worship.

Visiting the Centre

The Centre is better staffed these days and so if we have someone around when you call (like the webmaster for instance), they will do their best to help you.

The Centre teaching team

Members of the Western Buddhist Order run all Meditation and Buddhism classes. Click on the links below for profiles of the current teaching team.

The Centre and FWBO Ipswich

The Centre is run by a registered charity - the 'Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (Ipswich)', or 'FWBO Ipswich' for short. Our charity number is 1023335.

The Centre and the FWBO

The Centre is affiliated to the FWBO but the nature of this link is informal - it is based on spiritual lineage, respect and the network of friendships within the Western Buddhist Order. From a legal and administrative perspective, the Centre is autonomous.

The Centre and the Evolution shop

One of our co-tenants in 'Diamond House' (as our lease calls it), the Evolution shop is an FWBO 'Right Livelihood' (i.e. ethical) business. It is staffed by Ipswich and Colchester Buddhists. Through its connection with the Windhorse Trust, the Evolution shop provides substantial support for the Ipswich Buddhist Centre and thereby helps to keep it viable; for that we are very grateful.
