More about retreats

Weekend retreat group at Felixstowe Ferry Residential Centre

If you have never been on a Sangha retreat before, you may find the following tips helpful.

A retreat is great fun and a very good way to get to know other Sangha members. It is an opportunity to engage with the Dharma, to meditate and study; to spend time together in conversation and leave the outside world behind for a short while.

There will usually be periods of silence (i.e. not talking) overnight until after breakfast and during other meals. This preserves a meditative atmosphere and avoids wasting the energy that builds up through practice.

The 'household chores' are shared so it is a good chance to help with preparing and cooking the meals (you won't be expected to do it alone) - all of which will be vegan/vegetarian.

Accommodation is usually quite basic, rather like a youth hostel.

There will be a programme organised by the leader of the retreat, which follows a general pattern:

There's no obligation to participate in everything that is going on. You may feel the need to spend time alone - retreats can be quite emotional occasions. Remember, there is always someone to talk to should you feel the need, either an Order member or one of the other retreatants.
